About
Manchester Sedation Course started in 2015 and became accredited with Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry (IACSD) in March 2016. This accreditation was for a three-year period.
Since running the course, we have trained hundreds of dentists and dental care professionals in IV sedation with midazolam. We have received wonderful feedback from our delegates, and we have enjoyed every minute of it.
We have been reflecting on ways to improve the course and have redesigned the course after consultation with the Manchester Sedation Course team and feedback from other organisations such as the Dental Sedation Teachers Group (DSTG). This re- designed course has achieved a three year re accreditation with the Sedation Training Accreditation Committee (STAC) of Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry (IACSD) in January 2019. We are able to train complete beginners to IV sedation with midazolam to independent practice.
The General Dental Council requires that any dentist providing conscious sedation has undergone ‘appropriate training’. The IACSD 2015 standards document has suggested a training syllabus and practical skills requirements, which constitute ‘appropriate training’. These include completing a course covering the theoretical and practical aspects in sedation and maintaining a logbook showing a minimum of twenty supervised cases before a dentist can undertake conscious sedation independently.
The Manchester Sedation Course provides IACSD accredited training as well as providing 6 hours of enhanced CPD in conscious sedation. It is aimed at both beginners and those wishing to update their skills. We cover all the necessary theory and practical elements and offer beginners a structured mentoring program for them to get invaluable experience to ultimately provide conscious sedation independently.
We have sought guidance from experts and the defence organisations to ensure that we cover all the necessary aspects of sedation ensuring legal and safe practice and compliance with the IACSD standards for sedation training.
Manchester Sedation Course recommends dental nurses to eventually complete the NEBDN certificate in sedation, which is generally considered as the ‘Gold Standard’.
